Walker Woman

Julia Stein, poetry, Walker Woman,  West End Press, 2001. Cover is painting by Ruth Weisberg Exile and Exodus

The title poem from a story by Mary Austin is about a mysterious Walker Woman who “come and went about our Western world” establishing a saving relationship with the land in the American West.  Many of these poems celebrate the beauty of the U.S. West as well bemoan its destruction.

At the same time the poet has a series of poems about adjunct teaching in SouthCentral Los Angeles during the 1992 Justice Rebellion; another series about the death of her father; and a third series about the life and death of a romance.  Always the poet returns to the healing relationship to the land.
